What Is a Tummy Tuck?

Restore Your Shape

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the abdominal area while also repairing weakened or separated muscles.

It's especially helpful for women after pregnancy or for anyone who’s lost a significant amount of weight and is left with loose skin or bulging in the lower abdomen. By tightening the underlying structure and smoothing the skin, a tummy tuck creates a more toned and balanced midsection, often with the added benefit of improving how clothing fits and feels.

Reset Your Contours

What Is the Tummy Tuck Procedure Like?

On the day of surgery, you’ll receive general anesthesia in our fully accredited surgical suite.

Dr. Narasimhan will make a low horizontal incision, carefully placed to sit below the bikini line. From there, he removes excess skin and fat then repairs and tightens the abdominal muscles if needed.

Once the structure is reinforced, the remaining skin is gently redraped for a natural contour. If appropriate, the belly button is repositioned. You'll go home the same day with compression garments and a personalized recovery plan in place.

Building Core Confidence

What Are the Benefits of a Tummy Tuck?

Beyond aesthetic refinement, many patients experience improved posture, reduced back pain, and better core strength. The psychological boost is just as powerful. Clothes fit better, movement feels freer, and your body finally reflects how you feel inside.

Addressing Common Concerns

What Conditions Does a Tummy Tuck Address?

A tummy tuck is designed to treat:

  • Loose, sagging skin on the abdomen
  • Stretched or separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti)
  • Stubborn belly fat that won’t respond to diet or exercise
  • C-section shelf or post-pregnancy bulge

These concerns are common after childbirth, aging, or major weight loss. Surgery offers a way to reset your core and restore smoother, firmer contours.

Am I a Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

Good candidates for a tummy tuck are adults who have been unable to firm up their midsections in spite of following a healthy diet and exercise regimen. Many women find that after pregnancy, their stomachs won’t “bounce back” to their pre-pregnancy shape.

It is very common for overly stretched abdominal skin and muscles to remain stretched out, and only surgical intervention will create optimal improvement for many women.

Consider a tummy tuck if you have:

  • Loose skin or muscles in the abdomen that do not improve with exercise
  • A lax-appearing abdominal region following childbirth
  • Extra hanging skin after significant weight loss

People who have decent abdominal muscle tone but can’t rid themselves of excess belly flab may be able to improve their appearance solely through the use of liposuction. After a physical examination, Dr. Narasimhan can tell you if liposuction makes sense for you.

Support, Garments, and Small Wins

Tummy Tuck Recovery

Recovery times can vary depending on whether you combine your abdominoplasty with other procedures such as liposuction, breast lift, mommy makeover, or breast augmentation. If you’re undergoing a combined procedure, Dr. Narasimhan will review the timeline of your recuperation during your consultation.

Most abdominoplasty patients should plan to rest for about a week following surgery. You will likely wear a compression garment under your clothing for several weeks to provide support and help reduce swelling. You can plan to return to work within 7 to 14 days, unless you have a physically demanding job. Your abdomen will feel sore, but discomfort is manageable with prescribed medications. Although it’s important to resume light activities, such as walking, as soon as possible, you should avoid vigorous exercise for 4 to 6 weeks following surgery.

See and Feel the Change

Results of Your Tummy Tuck

Each tummy tuck procedure performed by Dr. Narasimhan is customized to meet the needs of the patient. Depending on your physical characteristics, your tummy tuck may:

  • Tighten lax skin
  • Repair separated or weakened muscles
  • Reduce fatty deposits around the midsection

The objective of a tummy tuck is a flat, smooth abdomen and a more defined waist. Although you’ll likely notice a change in the look of your abdomen relatively soon after surgery, your results will continue to develop over the course of several weeks. As time goes on, your incision will fade from red to pink to skin color, and swelling and bruising will diminish significantly. It may take several months for swelling to resolve entirely. As it does, you’ll begin to notice a firmer, flatter abdomen, and your waistband may fit more loosely. You’ll also likely get a big boost of confidence as you become more comfortable in clothes and bathing suits.

In order to maintain your tummy tuck results, you should plan to maintain a healthy weight, and you should be finished having children. Subsequent weight gain or pregnancy can cause the skin and muscles to stretch out again.

Scarring is often a concern for patients considering abdominoplasty. Although the procedure typically requires an incision that extends from hip to hip, Dr. Narasimhan takes care to make it as low on the abdomen as possible. For most patients, this results in a scar that is well‐hidden beneath most clothing and even swimwear. During your consultation, Dr. Narasimhan spends plenty of time answering your questions and discussing your concerns. You’ll know exactly what to expect before, during, and after your surgery.

I recently went to Dr. Narasimhan, and I have to say he is a miracle doctor. My results are fantastic. The level of care was extraordinary. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking to have a cosmetic procedure.
