CoolSculpting is a nonsurgical body contouring treatment that reduces subcutaneous fat through a process called cryolipolysis. While it is not a weight-loss treatment, it does slim down pockets of stubborn fat that resist diet and exercise. Popular treatment areas include:
Specialized applicators such as the CoolMini™ allow us to treat each area with increased precision and effectiveness.
CoolSculpting works by “freezing the fat” through cryolipolysis. When lowered to a precise temperature, fat cells freeze and die in a process called apoptosis. The body then naturally and gradually flushes these destroyed cells out, leaving behind a slimmer treated area and more even fat distribution. Because fat freezes at a higher temperature than other tissues, the treatment does not harm the surrounding skin or muscle.
Clinical studies show cryolipolysis may reduce subcutaneous fat in treated areas by up to 25% with just a single treatment.
During your treatment, your provider places the applicator over your targeted area. Using suction, the device pulls your excess fatty tissue into the applicator and positions it between the cooling panels. You may feel some intense cold at the beginning of your treatment before the area becomes numb. For the rest of your session, you are free to relax, read, or even nap. Most sessions take about an hour per treated area.
One of CoolSculpting’s greatest benefits is that it requires little no recovery or downtime. As your treated area warms back up at the end of your session, you may experience some tingling, redness, and sensitivity. These issues typically subside quickly. After your appointment, you are free to return to your daily activities, including work and exercise, right away.
CoolSculpting results are not immediate—they develop gradually over the course of about 1 to 3 months. At that time, you can determine whether you would benefit from additional treatments. Many people are happy with their results after a single session, but it’s not uncommon to require several appointments to achieve more dramatic fat reduction or target multiple areas.
CoolSculpting is typically best for those who have small, localized fat deposits and would like to avoid having surgery. However, liposuction is often a better option for people who want to treat multiple areas of the body or reduce a larger amount of fat.
