Am I a Good Candidate for Revision Rhinoplasty?

Whether you’ve had one rhinoplasty surgery, two, or more and are unhappy with the way your nose looks or how your breathing has been impacted, Dr. Narasimhan has the depth of experience and surgical skills needed to correct the problems.

Good candidates for revision rhinoplasty are in good health, do not smoke, and should have waited at least a year since their previous nose surgery to ensure the nose is fully healed and free from swelling. Call us today to book a consultation.

What Can Revision Rhinoplasty Correct?

Revision surgery can correct a variety of problems caused by a previous rhinoplasty performed by an inexperienced or unqualified surgeon. These problems often include:

  • Removing too much or not enough cartilage from the tip or bridge
  • Causing breathing problems
  • Creating or not correcting asymmetry or crookedness
  • Impacting the size or shape of the nostrils

Dr. Narasimhan performs revision procedures for ethnic rhinoplasty patients whose surgeon may not have had the necessary expertise to use the customized techniques needed for these surgeries.

Preparing for Your Revision Rhinoplasty

Because revision procedures are complex, preparation is essential. Here are some helpful tips:

  • Give your nose time to heal fully from the first procedure, which takes about a year, before having a revision rhinoplasty consultation.
  • Get all of your prescriptions filled before the date of your surgery.
  • Avoid blood thinners as directed prior to undergoing surgery.
  • Stop smoking at least 6 weeks prior to your surgery date, and don’t smoke during the recovery process.
  • Plan to have an adult friend or loved one drive you home following the procedure.
  • Expect recovery to be more difficult than the first time around.

Your Revision Rhinoplasty Surgery

Dr. Narasimhan performs revision rhinoplasty as an outpatient procedure using local anesthetic with sedation or general anesthetic. While primary rhinoplasty takes about 1 to 2 hours to perform, revision rhinoplasty takes longer due to its complexity.

Dr. Narasimhan uses the open technique because it allows him to see and directly access the internal structures of the nose. During revision surgery, Dr. Narasimhan may need to remove scar tissue. If the nasal structures such as the bridge or tip need rebuilding, he may use cartilage from one of your ears, ribs, or a frozen rib graft.

After making the desired adjustments, Dr. Narasimhan closes the incision with fine sutures and covers the nose with gauze and a bandage. He often places a splint over the nose to protect it in the early stages of healing.

Recovery After Revision Rhinoplasty

The length and specifics of recovery after revision rhinoplasty vary between patients and with the details of the surgery. Swelling and bruising may be more pronounced than after the previous surgery, but this is not always the case. Regardless, swelling peaks over the first 6 weeks and then gradually dissipates. Dr. Narasimhan will give you post-op instructions to follow closely regarding:

  • Wearing the nasal splint
  • Taping
  • Nasal massage
  • Activity restrictions

Your recovery and results will be directly affected by how strictly you follow your post-op instructions.

Does Dr. Narasimhan Perform Revision Rhinoplasty for Out-of-Town Patients?

Most certainly! Because expertise in these complex procedures is so difficult to find, people frequently travel from outside the area to have Dr. Narasimhan perform their revision surgery. Our 5-Step Travel Plan makes the process easy, from the initial consultation to the surgery and recovery.
