For many patients, rhinoplasty or nasal reshaping is performed in the teenage years. Often getting surgery younger in life allows patients the opportunity to have surgery before they start school, or enter the workforce. Other patients are aspiring actors or models who want a change earlier in their careers. Patients often come to Dr. Narasimhan’s practice during winter or summer holidays to have surgery. Regardless of reason, Dr. Narasimhan is a rhinoplasty specialist who has many young females and males in his practice in his Tampa Bay Florida practice. Let’s dive into some of the intricacies of teenage rhinoplasty…
There is no age cut off per se. Typically we evaluate patients in the office for candidacy for rhinoplasty. Dr. Narasimhan has operated on patients aged 13 or 14 in a developed females. An internal nasal exam and history needs to be gleaned.
Most patients decide on rhinoplasty if they would like a reshaping procedure to change appearance. Dr. Narasimhan’s goals is to create a nose that is balanced and proportionate with the rest of the face. Teenage years are also a time when patients may be more self-conscious about their appearance. While there are many emotions and feeling associated with the idea of having rhinoplasty or nosejob, the initial consultation is an opportunity to discuss the motivations and goals with the procedure.
The actual procedure of rhinoplasty in teenagers does not differ, however teenagers’ skin can at times differ from mature adult skin. Teenagers often have hormonal acne and during the postop process of taping, this can get slightly worse. Medical grade skin care and treatments can temper and control acne and sebaceous hypertrophy.
Recovery, while similar, can also be a challenge as teens are often returning to school or travelling for college. Dr. Narasimhan has online options for postop visits if this is the case.
Recovery is 6 weeks to full activity, with patients generally looking presentable within 10 days or so. Light activity restrictions need to be adhered to, so that edema, swelling, and scar tissue can be controlled.
Generally when the cast is removed, school work and school is permitted. As far as out of town travel ideally two weeks would be recommended ensure all issues can be seen and treated.
