Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty (Nosejob)–Does that work?

Narasimhan Plastic Surgery

I have gotten many questions regarding the so-called “non-surgical rhinoplasty”.  In our Tampa Bay practice, we perform both procedures–surgical rhinoplasty and non-surgical rhinoplasty.  What is the non-surgical nosejob, and will it help me?  For starters, we will discuss what this technique entails, and then go over patients that are good candidates for the procedure.  As a plastic surgeon double board certified in Plastic Surgery and ENT, Dr. Narasimhan has an experienced and unique perspective on these procedures.

Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty Defined
In this era of social media platforms such as instagram and facebook, we see dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and nurse practitioners performing this procedure.  It involves injecting soft tissue fillers (such Juvederm, Restlyane, or others), into the nose to camouflage a large hump, add projection to the nasal tip, or soften contour irregularities.  In a few sessions, patients can improve the shape of the nose without the hassle or inconvenience of anesthesia, operating room, and recovery.  This is the main attraction of the procedure.  Depending on the filler material used, results typically last 9-12 months.

Does it Work? Who are good candidates?

While there may be some spectacular looking before and after photos for this procedure, it works especially well in certain candidates…

  • Patients with one isolated aesthetic deformity such as an underprojected tip or small dorsal hump
  • Patients with contour irregularities after a surgical rhinoplasty who desire camouflage
  • Patients who insist on not having a surgical procedure

Since filler is by design a soft material, it does not have the rigidity of cartilage and feels softer.  Also, filler cannot achieve larger structural results similar to surgical rhinoplasty.

In my patient population at Narasimhan Plastic Surgery, we usually perform non-surgical nosejob on patients who have had previous rhinoplasty and desire a small touch-up filling when there are mild contour irregularities.  Since we provide the far more comprehensive surgical treatments, patients will get the honest perspective on what treatment will be best for them.
