Double Board Certification, Explained

When searching for the right plastic surgeon, you’ll probably come across the phrase “board-certified.” While many doctors in Tampa Bay and throughout the country claim to be “board-certified,” only a surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery has the highest standard of training for cosmetic plastic surgery procedures.

However, Dr. Narasimhan took his training to another level. While being certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery he also achieved certification by the American Board of Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose, and Throat Surgery). This additional board-certification in ENT gives him an extremely high level of skill when performing facial rejuvenation and rhinoplasty (nose job procedures). Only a surgeon in the nation each year have this unique training and level of distinction.

When a doctor is double board-certified, it means he or she has undergone a rigorous training process for two different medical specialties. Dr. Narasimhan is the only double board-certified plastic surgeon/ENT in St. Petersburg, Florida. He brings this unique skillset to Tampa Bay and the Florida Community. Both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery are accredited by the American Board of Medical Specialties, which is the “gold standard” for rigor in medical training.

Q & A

Why did you decide to become a doctor?

I grew up in Cincinnati, and both of my parents were physicians. My father was a general surgeon, and my mother was a family doctor with her own private practice. Thanks to them, I saw how fulfilling this type of work could be as well as how diverse the world of medicine is. Today I’m still immersed in medicine, both with my own career and that of my wife. She specializes in bone marrow transplants for oncology patients.

What drew you to plastic surgery?

When I did ENT (otolaryngology) I enjoyed the facial plastic surgery and I wanted a well-rounded training in body contouring, breast surgery, and reconstruction. Then I underwent my second training in plastic surgery, in which I really knew was my calling. Plastic surgery gives me the opportunity to be creative as well as use my surgical skills to improve lives and make people feel better about themselves. It is a unique specialty.

What is your favorite surgery?

I have a special place for all cosmetic surgery, but particularly facial surgery and rhinoplasty. In ENT we learned how to perform functional surgery on the nose, particularly septoplasties and reconstruction after trauma. Then in plastic surgery training I gained experience in cosmetic nasal surgery. This exemplifies the amazing blend of form and function that I enjoy in my current field.

What are your goals?

To have the best plastic surgery office in the area; which caters to the patient and provides the best aesthetic result with the utmost safety. We are constantly innovating to make this happen.

What attracts you to the Tampa Bay area?

Tampa Bay is a beautiful area with friendly people. My wife works at the Johns Hopkins Children’s hospital in St. Pete, and we love going to the beach, dining out, and enjoying all of the area’s outdoor activities. I’m also involved in a few philanthropic activities for local organizations that are close to my heart, such as the Junior League, St. Pete Glitter Queens and the American Lung Association. Professionally, I strive to provide the best care and service for cosmetic plastic surgery patients.
