How It Works

Intense pulsed light (IPL) works by delivering controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light energy into the skin. The light is absorbed by pigment and visible blood vessels, causing them to break down and gradually fade. At the same time, the thermal energy stimulates collagen production, improving overall skin texture and tone over time.

Unlike lasers that target a single wavelength, IPL uses a range of light wavelengths, making it versatile enough to address multiple concerns in a single treatment. It is a non-ablative treatment, meaning it works beneath the skin's surface without damaging the outer layer, which is why downtime is minimal.

Benefits of IPL

Intense pulsed light is a gentle yet effective way to rejuvenate your skin with little to no downtime. IPL is an excellent solution for correcting the following concerns:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sun damage & hyperpigmentation
  • Redness from acne and rosacea
  • Broken capillaries or facial veins

IPL treatments can be performed on the face, hands, décolleté, and shoulders to even out skin tone and color and leave skin feeling smoother and younger looking. BBL® (broadband light) is a more powerful type of IPL that treats similar concerns, is faster, and requires fewer treatments. For enhanced results, we can prime the skin by first performing a Hydrafacial treatment.

Your IPL Procedure

You may choose to have a numbing cream applied prior to your procedure to enhance comfort. During the 30-minute treatment, pulses of photo-thermal energy are delivered to the desired area.

These pulses cause a sensation that most patients compare to a rubber band snapping against the skin. Most patients will undergo a series of 3 to 5 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart.

Your Recovery

Immediately following the procedure, there may be redness and swelling that resembles a mild sunburn.

This typically goes away in a matter of hours and shouldn’t interfere with your regular activities. You will be given specific instructions for your aftercare, including sun protection and the appropriate skin care products. Improvements will emerge over the course of several weeks, and follow-up treatments may be recommended for optimal results.
