Exercising After Breast Augmentation: What You Need To Know

One of the first questions I’m asked by my breast augmentation patients in St. Petersburg is, “When can I exercise again?”

Exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, and it’s something that you should ease back into gradually after breast augmentation surgery. Doing too much too soon could put you at risk for complications or even compromise your results.

What Exercises Can You Do Post Breast Augmentation?

At first, a small amount of exercise—such as light walking—is recommended in the first few weeks following your procedure to enhance circulation and help prevent blood clots. Heavy or strenuous exercise, however, should be avoided for several weeks. This includes activities such as running, biking, swimming, or weight lifting.

Week-by-Week Exercise Timeline

Listen to your body and your physician when resuming your exercise routine. This will help you stay healthy, avoid possible complications, and protect your breast augmentation results.

Generally, I recommend the following exercise schedule for my breast augmentation patients:

Weeks 1 and 2

You may feel very tired or sore the first few weeks after your breast augmentation. This is normal. Take comfort in knowing that this is the ideal time for you to rest and recover. Get plenty of rest, relax, and try to take it easy. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

During the first 1 to 2 weeks, I give my patients the green light for most normal, daily activities, such as light walking or household chores. However, lifting anything over 10 lbs. (including children) is not permitted.

Weeks 3 and 4

After the second week, most women are starting to feel more like themselves. Swelling is improving, soreness is minimal if not gone, and they feel better overall.

Most of my patients feel good enough to start walking uphill on a treadmill or engage in more aerobic workouts during weeks 3 and 4. In some cases, lower body strength training can also be included at this time. Sexual activity can also be resumed after the 3rd week.

Weeks 5 and 6

Back to the gym! Most women feel well enough during week 5 and 6 to go back to the gym and engage in workouts like running, biking, or swimming. This is an exciting time for many of my patients who are used to living an active lifestyle. Upper body workouts such as weight lifting can now be incorporated, as well.

Week 6 and beyond

After 6 weeks into your recovery, you should be back to your normal routine. Weight lifting, yoga, or any other fitness regimen is usually safe at this time. However, make sure you check with your plastic surgeon before starting a new exercise program.

Communication Is Key

Communicating with your plastic surgeon is extremely important for your recovery and health. This allows your doctor to monitor your progress and make sure you are healing as you should. Never hesitate to ask questions about what kind of exercise you should or shouldn’t do. And always follow your doctor’s orders—this will help you avoid injury and safeguard your results.
